Patient Participation Group

Did you know that there is a Patient Participation Group at Blackthorn Health Centre?

Who are they, and what do they do?

Who we are...
We are an independent voluntary group of patients who take an active interest in the service provided by the Practice and the welfare of its fellow patients.

Originally formed in 1998, we have been working tirelessly over the years to highlight and recommend improvements in service in support of patients’ needs whilst promoting greater awareness of health issues amongst the patient population.

We are part of a nationwide movement of patient participation and are affiliated to the National Association of Patient Participation.

What we do...
The work of the group is targeted at improving communication between patients, the Health Centre and other local groups. It is a working partnership helping to develop mutual interests in accessible, local and quality healthcare.

There are two main strands to our work.

Firstly, we encourage patients to feedback their views and suggestions about the service provided by the Health Centre through the various means available, eg the Patient Reference Group,  GP surveys etc, and to follow up with the Health Centre management to ensure these views are taken on board and actioned where appropriate.

Secondly, together with members of the Practice we attempt to inform and involve patients on topical health issues, primarily through an annual programme of Awareness Events.

How we do it...
We meet monthly, alternating between formal and informal meetings. Formal meetings are held at the Practice with the Practice management.

And finally...
For many years it has been recognised that patient engagement in the NHS is an important ingredient to the provision and development of quality service. The recent reforms reinforce this involvement even more strongly.

And the management and staff at Blackthorn Health Centre have fully embraced the active participation of their patients. They are very supportive of our work and welcome input that will help to improve the service they offer.

So why not join us? Pick up a leaflet at reception, or email me at
